Staging a great text is an exciting and complex endeavor. This is the challenge taken on by Matthieu Cruciani, who tackles one of the masterpieces of Racine’s work with “Phèdre.” “I want to grasp the subconscious of this play, the repressed, the mysteries, and the shadows. That’s what attracts me to ‘Phèdre’: a great dark dream,” explains the director. Here, Thésée’s grand palace takes on a Viscontian atmosphere. The fantastical, with its marine creatures and incarnate gods, coexists with a humanity full of neuroses, plagued by incessant nightmares. The musical compositions by Carla Pallone, with their baroque or classical echoes, inhabit and haunt the play, resonating with our modern world. It becomes a theater of ambiguity and irony, blending comedy, drama, and tragedy.
