Published in 1985, “La Douleur” (The Pain) is an autobiographical collection by Marguerite Duras, in which she recounts the anticipation, fear, and despair she experienced during the spring of the Liberation, when she was still unsure if her husband had survived deportation.
In this restaging of Patrice Chéreau’s celebrated production, Dominique Blanc brilliantly embodies this significant text that carries the full intensity of Duras’s work. For Blanc, who confesses to having always dreamt of living and growing old with this play, “La Douleur” is a cry, a love song, a piece about revolt, and a beating heart.
